The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

Hello everyone, I have opened this thread strictly with the intention of over clocking in mind.

This means I will not be held responsible for any damages or failures that may occur in the preparation and over clocking process.

A lot of you here know the risks, a lot do not, the best way to use the over clocking utilities is to increase the FSB in increments of 10! No more no less, don’t try overloading it, don’t push it because some guy said it can do it, everyone’s chips are different, and you must remember temperature monitoring is VITAL!

First of all, you will need:

CPUID Hardware Monitor. (Freeware temperature monitoring tool!)

Found Here

http://www.cpuid.com/download/hwmoni..._114_setup.exe

Second, tools to stress the system, this could be prime95 or Wprime tool.

Wprime 2.0 here

http://www.wprime.net/?q=download&f=wprime_200.zip

Prime 95 here

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

Wprime is easiest to use, just boot it up and hit 1024, and I am unfamiliar with prime 95 but torture test is very helpful! (Appreciate any contributions on how to use this feature.)

Ok, as stated, here are the instructions for over clocking the GT725 via the program known as setFSB. (Quad included)

It is designed to work on the GT725 (mainly MSI 1722 models with the Intel P,45 chipset)

Here are the requirements for software and firmware to over clock.

You will need:

1. The required bios with the number: A1722IG6.10S and can be found on the link posted below.

http://rapidshare.com/files/233584112/1.0S.zip

2. The EC version (for touch sensors) is 1722EG61.429, found below:

http://rapidshare.com/files/233584578/4.29.zip

3. SetFSB (Set Front Side Bus) from the website below.

http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/down...2_2_123_90.zip

The bios and EC firmware are from the 1722 Barebones or gx720 I believe but I’m not sure (hopefully someone can confirm)

Now that everything is in order, download all files, put them in a neat place so you have access to them.

Firstly, go into bios, load all bios defaults and disable C-State.

Second, you need to perform a bios update and ec firmware update, so perform the update or flash, whatever it is known as, when complete, again go into bios and load bios defaults and disable C-State.

Since I’m using a similar version on my machine, not the MSI one, I have had not needed to update the bios so I do not know how, can someone chip in here? Appreciate it.

What will happen is, you will loose function to the turbo mode on the touchpad (we can re-flash bios and EC firmware after, but I would suggest finding the bios and EC firmware before attempting this!)

When the flash is complete, we now have unlocked the limits that the MSI has in place (for the quad and duo!) but this means we can now begin slowly increasing clocks.

Start your SetFSB PROGRAM, and where it tells you to select PLL, you need to select the code.

ICS9LPRS113AKLF

When this code is selected, click the GetFSB and the values should be read and you’re FSB and core clock should be successfully read. At this point you have access to RAM speed and FSB as well as PCI speed, don’t touch the PCI speed, we do not need this at all and is best left untouched!

You can see the PLL version is input, and the GETFSB button has been pressed to reveal information

As stated before, over clocking takes time, and patience! It also requires you to be tolerant, if your Laptop cant handle the changes, don’t force it dam it!

Also it is suggested to read SETFSB read me, it has a lot of commands etc that can be used, you could even create run scripts

People have used this method (mainly folks over at gt725.de) and it works again OCing, too high and too fast, the system can crash.

Again all is at your OWN RISK!

Ok, so with the quad (duo core are just as important but you guys have OC ability) Take it up 10 mhz each increment until you reach say, 2.2ghz and run a test (Wprime1024 or prime95 + HWMonitor) then to 2.3ghz then 2.4ghz and so on, Asus’ record is 2.8ghz, There limit for this was also the ram, just like our limit is 2.4 so far because of ram, WE HAVE TO FIND THIS RAM TOOL!

Keep HWmonitor open at all time, make sure you monitor the temps.

And good luck over clocking!

Credits go to Msaw and Tester in the gt725 forum , i simply translated, and GPU (ATI 4850 tutorial will soon follow) Any questions, just ask!

Good Luck All.

Original reference - Here!

http://forum.gt725.de/index.php?page...d&threadID=228

Its German so it may need translation tools, but these folk tested the method and it ran sucessfully.

***********Updated********************

A user named rupp3r here in the MSI forum has created a tutorial to benefit us greatly! The tutorial covers installation of 9.6 ATI drivers which supposedly give great increase in gaming performance.

http://rupp3r.free.fr/gt725/tutodriveren.htm

It should also grant some nice results overclocking with Overdrive (Tutorial soon to be made for OD clocking)

**************************************

Personal Message - Taking in factors from some more recent experience, i can conclude that Wprime does not really stress the CPU components much, but rather uses the full power of the CPU that is available, to stress the CPU and RAM, the tools i reccomend are (Prime95 - works for CPU and memory i believe and gives them a thorough testing, and OCCT test which requires all the stock heating paste and pads replacing as this test cooks the Laptop harder then anything i've seen, also if you do run OCCT, you will come to learn that the MSI has 1 more fan stage that you probably thing doesn't exist, but when temps hit 90C on the Northbridge, this stage kicks in and sounds like it almost doubles the RPM of the fan - This test burns, be warned!)

************Tutorial********************

The basics of overdrive.

Overdrive is an in built system tool, built into catalyst that allows you to overclock ATI cards (Nvidia have similar but i will cover later), this, theoretically should be supported by MSI due to the abilities they give you to overclock the system by default, meaning this should not break anyway warrenty, only by flashing the card v bios are you really stretching the card itself and leaving it prone to damage.

Step 1) Double click the ATI button on the right hand side of the task bar.

Step 2) When it opens you should see simple messages asking if you want basic or advanced settings, set it to advanced (its not really advanced by the way)

Step 3) Click on overdrive and click the lock that will bring up a warning promt,

Step 4)Go ahead an accept that, now you will notice that the greyed out information has become active and can now be edited with.

So just go ahead and slowly slide the bars up until you either experience problems when testing custom clocks, or you begin to artifact, i noticed 8.6 drivers had some problems trying to take them up to full speed, but all the 9.* drivers can handle 550 and 900 without sweating, but be careful either way.

This can add a few frames here and there and shouldn't be used 24/7 but if you really must , if you want to turbo charge the overdrive feature, u'l need to flash the cards bios but i wont cover that...yet.

***************Tutorial***************

Relocking Overdrive

Well i know your probably wondering if this is do-able or not, but just for future reference, it is

Do relock the overdrive feature, there are a few simple steps.

Step 1) Open catalyst control centre and hit the preferences tab, when the menu appears click restore factory defaults.

Step 2) Press the windows key and R button on your keyboard, and type regedit in the run box.

Step 3) Follow the registry bellow until you see Overdrive5.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > ATI > ACE > Settings > Dashboard > Graphics > Overdrive5

When you click overdrive5 the two registries (Default) and TimeUnlocked appear, double click time unlocked and type never then reboot, simple ATI is reset to default and locked.

So what's the highest OC did you get on yours?

Great work btw

Reply 2 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

Well i managed to get a friends to 2.35GHz but it jumped the gun to 2.7 because of intel dynamic accel (need to turn that off :/ ) But we definately know that RAM is the biggest concern here, if we could break that, the q9000 potential is unimaginable!

4850 flashing guide will hopefully be uploaded tonight

This is awesome! Thanks catacylsm !

MSI GT725 + qx9300

Reply 4 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

I just wanted to confirm that BIOS and firmware versions are from MS-1722 or GX720. I'm using barebone MS-1722 and my achievements can be seen in my signature. I didn't use SetFSB, just the ordinary OC button, witch is set to +24% OC form BIOS. I'm sure that mine can do more, but the memory is that it pulls it back.

Otherwise very good job cataclysm. Hope this thread grows larger.

Reply 5 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

Jeepers over 4k on that mark is great, what is the clock speed of the qx now??

Hey Genna thats good news, in some cases using turbo + setfsb can result in even better results , this is mainly good because it allows the q9000 to be overclock, with ram replacement and timings set correctly, we could hold 2.7ghz to 2.8ghz stable, just like they did in the ASUS thread with the W90 model.

And Welcome to NBR ain.

BTW we'd need a FSB of like 1500 haha

Reply 6 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

Updated with two more quick guides as well as someone will soon test the RAM tool i found, it reads and writes the eprom that controls ram and such.

Reply 7 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

i love the turbo button!! i read somewhere that laptops are capped at 3.0 ghz some where. if i upgrade to a t9900 on my gt627 will i go above 3.06ghz x 1.15%? or will i already be capped. thanks !!!

Reply 8 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

So in order to overclock a quad with a 1722/gx720, you need to flash to the gx725 bios?

Reply 9 : The MSI Overclocking Thread! (Stricly For OC)

Darth Bane,

In order to use a quad core CPU on MS-1722 you need to update BIOS. Older BIOSes (before 1.0n) don't support quads. I didn't check what BIOS GX725 use, but I can tell you that updating to the latest 1.0s (you can download it from the first post of cataclysm) will do the job.

AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

Hi!

I have a problem with my touchpad on my VAIO F13 laptop. I can't get it to work (tried almost everything). So I decided to low-format my HDD with diskpart's clean all command - and I did. When I then rebooted the laptop with the Windows 7 DVD in the optical drive and the DVD loaded - at the first screen, when the mouse/touchpade pointer shows itself the touchpad was working for about two seconds (I was able to move the pointer!). But then it stopped again. It's like something (really don't know what because the whole HDD is low-formatted using Diskpart's Clean all command) disabled the touchpad after the two seconds. Maybe this could be a hind: when I firsto got my brand new VAIO I disabled the touchpad after a few days and then later one quick-formated the HDD when installing an other version of Windows 7 x64 (not the preinstalled one). I tought that maybe it's possible that the "disabled touchpad setting" got saved on some hidden place (hidden partition?) so I low-formated it now to get to the bottom of this mystery. But it's still not working. At least I know that it's not a hardware problem. Does anyone know what could it be and how could I re-enable it again?

Thank you!

Reply 1 : AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

uhh... what did you "try"? Also, usually when one finds their touchpad doesn't work, they reinstall the touchpad drivers. In any case, in your taskbar, do you see the touchpad icon? Open it up, go to Device Settings tab, then make sure your Synaptics TouchPad is enabled. Then click on the button that says "Animated tray icon in taskbar". (this is the same as Control Panel >> Mouse). Now you should see the touchpad icon in the taskbar and touch it and see if you see any depression in there... There was some program to check if your touchpad worked... i forgot where though.

edit: the thing i was talking about is, right click the icon under accessories choose MoodPad, then use the pad. see if it is actually tracking anything. If not, time to call Sony to replace the touchpad

Reply 2 : AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

What you still haven't done. What I have recommended you do in one of the other threads...

Do a PROPER system install from your Sony Recovery Discs to bring everything back to original factory settings. If the touchpad does not work in that environment, then you have a real issue going on.

Do you even have recovery discs?

Reply 3 : AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

I don't have the recovery discs (nor any other VAIO disc) and the recovery partition is gone. The touchpad as a hardware unit works, I'm 100% sure of that. It's like something tells it to stop working after 2 seconds into the Windows 7 installation.

Reply 4 : AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

I guess that the only thing I can do is to install Windows 7 without tht touchpad working and try to enable it alter on - but I don't know how - or with what.

Reply 5 : AtTouchpad problem on my VAIO laptop

When I created two partitions and formated them (C: for Windows and D: for storege of misc files) a third partition has been made, 86 MB in size - it said it's a system partition or something like that. Is it possible that this is a recovery partition which isn't gone after all?

Samsung Series 4 450 32-Inch TV Can't Turn On Game Mode

I just got this TV and I found the button that says game mode, while I have a Xbox 360 connected through the 2nd HDMI port. The problem is that I CANNOT click on Game Mode. It just isn't highlighted and it's really starting to annoy me. I looked at the manual and it's just teasing me telling me how it'll lower input lag and such. Any ideas?

In the tvs menu. Settings/general and you can toggle it on and off from there. Don't think it actually until you label an input as game ( which you already done )

But I am failed. Friends, have you any solution for this kind of problem ? If yes, please help me. You can mail me. My email ids are : sumitdas1@yahoo.com and sumitdas81@gmail.com . Thanks in advance. Bye.....

MSI Parts

For those looking for MSI laptop parts, www.laptoppartsexpert.com is listing generic parts. They say they can get almost anything so you can fill out their part request form for anything not listed on the website. Might be the easiest way to find what you are looking for.

They don't offer motherboards or video cards though.

Does anyone has these problems with their winter (silver aluminum) dv7 or dv6?

1. Keyboard is slightly uneven, one edge is a little higher than the other.

2. Click pad is slightly uneven, same issue

3. Aluminum chassis has slight scuff marks if looked on under certain lighting conditions

4. Most importantly...hard drive periodically making clicking noises

If you do, or had those issues, would you consider returning?

None of these problems are noticed on my computer. However here are some comments:

1. The keyboard has a bit of play in it if you push it down from one end. It may even be there because of softer shock resistant plastic material under it. It does not cause any performance degradation.

2. The click-pad is seated in a form fitting rectangular indentation. It is not uneven. I guess if the fitting was not just right, it might appear uneven.

3. No scuff marks on the chassis. However, its design itself would make the scuff marks, if any, less obvious.

4. With the solid state drive in my computer, there are no noises or sounds from the drive.

If the problem that you notice are bothersome, cause dissatisfaction or result in performance issues, by all means contact HP to resolve your concern.

System recovery discs- what if DVD drive fails?

Just trying to cover all my bases here. I've created the system recovery discs from the special partition. I'm wondering though, what if I need to restore my system to its factory state, but for some reason my DVD drive has failed? Is there a way to put the system recovery information on an external HDD, and boot from it?

I don't expect a situation like this to occur, but I figure, what the hell, might as well see if something can be done in the unlikely event it does happen.

Reply 1 : System recovery discs- what if DVD drive fails?

Talk about a difficult to answer question!

If your DVD has failed and it's a single point of failure-then i think you have just that! Can you put the distribution on a seperate disk? Yes. Get an external drive or partition your disk and put it on. I'd do a practise run so the failure that is a concern to you isn't the first time.

Personally, I've never needed to replace the system disk data. I am unsure how it could fail.

Renee

Reply 2 : System recovery discs- what if DVD drive fails?

Your first attempt should be to restore the OS is from the recovery partition which does not require an optical drive.

You could always buy another optical drive or an external one?

The DVD drive on a ThinkPad is hot-swap, so you can always call Lenovo and ask them to send you a new one (assuming your machine is still under warranty). If the warranty has expired you have four options:

  • Borrow an optical drive from a friend/associate with a ThinkPad. This is easy for me since many of my friends have ThinkPads.
  • Use an external optical drive, either purchased (around $40) or borrowed.
  • Use a USB to SATA adapter with a desktop optical drive. The converters are around $15.
  • Buy a new optical drive on eBay.

I wouldn't worry about it. I, on the other hand, failed to make recovery discs and then blew away the recovery partition. Which gets to be a problem if I want to sell the laptop.

Reply 4 : System recovery discs- what if DVD drive fails?

I prefer the bootable USB recovery disk method for this very reason. My paranoia about spinning drive reliability, and the ease of acquiring the 8 gig thumbdrive necessary for the process, make it a very attractive option.

Obviously, I want top notch speeds.. My budget is high.

I think you should just start a single thread, instead of multiple threads with all the different questions.

RAM is RAM is RAM is RAM. There are only a few DRAM manufacturers these days, it's all about the end company with their warranty/RMA service. CAS latency and speed really does not make a real difference. I personally recommend Crucial/Corsair.

I believe 0.37 inch > 9.4mm which is thicker than 7mm which is, what I read, the size of the X220 drive bay. It says so in the link that lead_org posted.

Btw, that drive costs more than I paid for my X200t.

The optimal solution in the new gen Thinkpads is to use the 40 or 80gb mSATA ssd for the boot drive and use the 7mm 320gb hdd for media storage.

Very High Pitched and Super Quiet beep/sound from DV6

They seem to make a new DV6 every year but This one is mine.

I've had this notebook since September and its awesome. But there is a very annoying issue I have always had with it. When I'm using it in a very quiet environment I can hear it emit a high pitched beep type sound every second. Its extremely quiet but its one of those sounds your brain suddenly notices and you can't stop hearing it - like when some old CRT monitors and tube TV's are left on. I usually only hear it when the PC is idle or doing very basic tasks like I'm doing now typing this. I thought for sure it was something else in my home for the first month until I was using the notebook someplace else and heard the same annoying sound. When I put my ear up to the notebook I can hear it better and that its somehow tied with the fan. I can hear the fan barely slow down by probably 5%, then that beep and the fan speeds up again. This happens continuously until I'm not idle. Anyone else notice this? My motherboard was replaced a month ago (It randomly died) but nothing changed.

Might this be "CPU whine"?

Question to Samsung RF-711 owners

Hi!

I have a question to people who have bought the Samsung RF-711 laptop.

What is the revision of your gear? Is it REV_04 with Stepping B2?

You can check it by typing in windows command prompt (start -> run -> cmd):

wmic idecontroller get deviceid

and in the returned string please search for REV_XX

Checking the stepping type is possible with ex. CPU-Z

I would be very thankful if you could provide me this information.

HP Notebook Fan Control in HWiNFO32 (ROUND 2 - AUTO FAN CONTROL CONFIG) !

Since I have received a lot of feedback on the Manual Fan Control I implemented on certain EliteBook series (as discussed here: HP Notebook Fan Control in HWiNFO32 !) and a lot of requests to enahnce the features to be able to modify the Automatic fan control tables as well, I have decided to implement this too.

The original Fan Control allowed to change the controller to Manual Control state and set the fan speed to any value.

This is the 2nd round of fan control which allows to modify the LUT (Look Up Table) which is activated when the controller is in automatic mode.

Supported notebook models remain the same as previously (those which contain the SMSC EMC2103 or SMSC EMC2113 controllers).

To activate this feature use the same method as disclosed in the previous thread. Now an additional Lookup Table is displayed. To access this table, the controller needs to be switched to manual mode.

The LUT consists of 8 different levels of fan control and each level is activated based on the value of any of the 4 displayed temperature thresholds (if any of these temperatures reaches the threshold value defined, the specified fan RPM value is activated). On some models (like the 8740w), only Temp3 is monitored and available to be changed. On some others, the External temperatures are included in the table as well.

Note, that on several models, the Temp3 doesn't contain a real temperature value (in degrees Celsius), but a PWM duty cycle instead which is a value supplied to the fan controller circuit. For example on 8740w it's the value sampled on the PWM_IN pin, on 8730 it's the value of Pushed Temperature 1. This value doesn't have a real correspondence to a fixed temperature value. Anyway, it's possible to modify this value (probably best would be some kind of guessing based on system observation). You can convert the PWM duty cycle into % by: ( value/128 ) * 100 [%]

If you make any changes to the LUT, pressing the "Apply and Save" button stores the values into the fan controller circuitry and switches to Automatic mode to activate them (the controller needs to be in the Automatic mode in order to use the LUT values). These settings are then remembered in the registry as well, so when you run HWiNFO32 again and open Sensors, the values set will be loaded into the chip. This means, that to have your custom settings always active (after a reboot), you should autorun HWiNFO32 with Sensors (because the fan controller is configured by BIOS). This has the advantage that the original settings are always restored during boot in case the user makes a mistake. If you wish to clear the custom LUT settings, press the "Clear Preferences" button in HWiNFO32 / Configure.

Sample screenshot (HP 8740w):

Sample explanation:

Rule 4: If the PWM_IN Duty cycle reaches 48 (37.5%), then fan speed is set to 3233 RPM.

Rule 5: If the PWM_IN Duty cycle reaches 64 (50%), then fan speed is set to 3510 RPM.

BE CAREFUL WHEN CHANGING ANY SETTINGS AND BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY POTENTIAL DAMAGE !

Download the latest HWiNFO32 release which supports this feature:

Please submit your feedback if/how this feature works !

Update: HWiNFO32 v3.69-1149 allows to modify the Fan Minimum Drive setting (the minimum fan speed in %, a value below this threshold is considered by the fan controller as invalid and can't be used).

Reply 1 : HP Notebook Fan Control in HWiNFO32 (ROUND 2 - AUTO FAN CONTROL CONFIG) !

Wow, great job, Martin!

I tested it and it works perfectly! Here's what was changed:

1. Fan 1649 - no changes

2. Fan 2318 -

3. Fan 2700 -

4. Fan 3233 -

5 and beyond - no changes

With the above changes the fan will kick in to 2700rpm @70C, and max@75-77C. Cooldown to 65C will reduce the speed from max to 2700rpm, and 55C will bring it to the default 1649rpm.

Thank you!

Reply 8 : HP Notebook Fan Control in HWiNFO32 (ROUND 2 - AUTO FAN CONTROL CONFIG) !

Say, how are you even accessing the i2c (smbus), when the smbus controller doesn't appear even though its bit is cleared in the "function disable register"?

If you can open-source that piece, then Linux will be able to use its own EMC driver.

Also, on my 8530w, there are 4 editable columns; how do I know which things to set to what? The headers are: Temp1 (ext1), Temp2 (ext2), Temp3 (push1), Temp4 (int). Not all of those temperatures appear in the actual readings pane.

Reply 9 : HP Notebook Fan Control in HWiNFO32 (ROUND 2 - AUTO FAN CONTROL CONFIG) !

So you say that when you clear RCBA+0x3418 bit3, the SMBus PCI device is still not decoded on bus? That shouldn't happen and I don't do anything more to enable that device.

As for the 4 temperatures, if either of them crosses the threshold then it's activated. On these models it seems that Temp3 is the most important one..

In this case Temp1 is the External sensor diode 1, dunno where the diode is really located (could be under CPU), Temp2 is External sensor 2, Temp3 is pushed into the chip from some source (dunno which) and Temp4 is the Internal temperature of the EMC (mostly used as the motherboard temperature). You should see the values of these temperatures in HWiNFO32 sensors.

power cord

Does Dell sell the cord that plugs into the power supply separately? I looked on the Dell parts website and all I could find was the power supply and cord together. I have a Precision m4400 and my power supply says it is the PA-4e family. I will be living in Argentina for awhile so I wanted to get a cord for my computer that works with those outlets so I don't have to worry about using a converter all the time, but I can't seem to find where Dell sells just the cord.

HP dv7t se delivery delayed twice. No proper reasons given

Ordered my dv7tse on Feb 24th.

Estimated delivery was Mar 7th, which got delayed to Mar 18th, which is now delayed AGAIN to April 1st.

The sad part is I am not being given any proper answer (I escalated the issue!), except for a canned "parts shortage" from every talking head at their support center. They wont tell we what part (apparently they don't have that info from the warehouse!).

Are others facing delays in their delivery as well? Mine is a very generic configuration (nothing fancy), so am at my wits end to figure out why I will not have a laptop for ATLEAST 5-6 weeks after HP has charged money on my CreditCard (Feb 24th).

Sony Vaio F 136 fan

I have recently bought an f 136. When I have it pluged in the fan runs high, but when run just using the battery the fan stops.

Can sombody through some light on this as to why this is happening.

Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide whether to get a i7 2620 or or 2720 for an XPS 15 I'll be ordering soon. The difference is only 30 bucks..will the 2720 emit a lot more heat, fan on more often, etc?

I'll be using the laptop mainly for surfing web (20+ tabs), CS5, running multiple programs at same time, some light gaming (starcraft 2).

Please advise.

Reply 1 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

The TDP is different by 10 watt (dual core vs quad core) both will get toasty under full load. The XPS 15 cooling system can handle 45 watt processors so you should be good to go. 30 bucks is a good deal. If you do CS5 alot and SC2 (NOT light gaming at all, it stresses out even the most expensive gaming rigs), I would go with the quad core i7.

Reply 2 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

Quad definitely

Reply 3 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

30 bucks is too cheap to pass up! all other venders charge 150 +

Reply 4 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

Web surfing = dual core.

CS5 and gaming = quad core.

Reply 5 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

While at first I was very adamant on buying dual cores (due to having used an i7-720QM before), I am now more open to quad cores (since I have an SXPS 16 with i5-460M, which gets damn hot on idle and feels like a quad core, and new i7 quads have better - higher - frequencies than the older gen).

It will be quite hot, much more than the dual core. However, the dual core would still be very hot (compared to what many are used to) at 35W TDP.

Yeah this is what I'm worried about - heat. Honestly, an i5 would be just fine for me but Dell is not offering it as an option on the XPS 15. I don't NEED tons of computing power, but I'm thinking more along the lines of future proofing in making my decision as well...

Reply 7 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

Dell still offers the i5 here in the USA:

Dell XPS 15 Laptop Details | Dell

I would still go with the quad core, as the heat will now be less of an issue with Optimus support, and for the sole fact of future proofing for only $30 extra.

Reply 8 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

Best thing is to wait for a month or so. Many people here have ordered their systems and so initial impressions & reviews will come soon. Then you'll know whether i7 quads heat up or drain battery.

The price may also go down if you can wait a little. It will be high at launch to milk the early adopters.

Reply 9 : Should I get the i7 2620 or i7 2720 in XPS 15?

I wouldn't say the price is very high...at least in Germany...but here the standard config for better equipped systems is the 2630QM which could be considered best of both...its rather fast...at least on par with the 2620M but its a quad, which might be more futureproof.

You have to consider however that even the 2630QM is considerably faster than any previous generation CPUs...even the 940XM!!

What tab should I buy?

Hi all,
I am Santhosh Kumar from chennai (INDIA). I am seriously in a confusion . Within next month I planned to buy a tab. So I made some analysis with I-Pad, Samsung Gallexy Tab, Dell, Blackberry. Now the thing I saw some 3 G connection supports in all the TAB so what should I buy because here after I am not in mood to carry mobile along with me so tell me whether TAB supports indian mobile networks connection. I am presently using Airtel. Also suggest me what tab I should choose also echonmic is much important.

With Regards and Thanks in Advance,
Santhoshvkumar

Reply 1 : What tab should I buy?

That's easy. Machines may be localized according to the country where they are sold. So it's unlike that - once they are being sold in India - they won't work there. Just ask the seller for a demo, ask their customer service or carefully read the specs.

Take care when buying from some unknown Chinese wholesaler and check that support for Indian infrastructure is present. You wouldn't be happy with one that only works in China or the USA.

Kees

Reply 2 : What tab should I buy?

Firstly if you dont want to carry your mobile with you then samsung galaxy tab is the only option because no through no other tablate you can make calls. 3g is still very expensive in India so check out the plans before hand.
Otherwise i would suggest ipad ,i have been using it for about an year now, ITS THE BEST.
Blackberry playbook can only be fully utilised if you have a blackberry handset.

Can't find the right Viao ?!

Hi

I would like to buy a Viao (2011 stuff) but i can't find the right one here's the thing :

I need Quad core (the 2.2 probably)

I need portable notebook ... 15" (around)

I need a good quality screen

I use 3ds Max and Photoshop and After effect

- I like the Vaio S, but it's not Quad core, I like the small look, sharp and clean

- The new Serie F is a bit too huge, don't want that thing on my thigh in the Bus/Metro etc... And i don't care about the 3d and after seeing some video of the new F, im not so sure about the quality screen !

- there a new EF on Canadian website of sony, but no info at all

- The serie C are... not quad core... not realy for work (well it could be fine i guess)

So... What left ? Wich serie should i wait for ?

Reply 1 : Can't find the right Viao ?!

HP Elitebook, Thinkpad W series, Dell Precision are much more designed for your needs - Sony don't offer a real workstation laptop.

Reply 2 : Can't find the right Viao ?!

Could you please post the link for the EF?

Reply 3 : Can't find the right Viao ?!

The only laptop in the VAIO line up that offers a Quad Core processor is the F series.

So yea, you need to look at HP,Lenovo,Dell alternatives.

The EF doesn't have a quad core either.

On my Third Samsung Plasma TV, Can any Samsung techs help?

I am very unhappy with my defective Samsung Plasma TV as I am now going on my 3rd defective Samsung plasma. The other day my 3rd TV which is only 6 months old gets another horizontal line at the bottom of the TV. I called Customer Service the same day and they said they would send a tech out to look at the TV and the tech indicated the panel needed to be replaced. The previous TV had these same issues with the panel being replaced 3 times. A panel replacement will not fix the issue and honestly I am getting tired of having my TV serviced or replaced every couple of months. I am asking if it would be possible to either receive a full refund or be switched to an LCD equivalent or an upgraded model. The service number is 4007989248. The model number is PN50C550G1FXZA. The S/N is Z1MZ3CQZ314480D.

Time line as follows:
4/27/2010- Original TV breaks and does not work at all
05/2010- 1st replacement TV has vertical lines, panel gets replaced
08/21/2010-1st replacement TV has lines in it again, panel gets replaced again
09/21/2010- Panel gets replaced a third time and shortly after get a nice white vertical line on it. I get a brand new replacement TV
03/06/2011- 2nd replacement TV has black horizontal line in it.

I just spoke with Customer Service in the Executive customer service department today and they advised me they could only replace the panel and they would be unable to replace the TV at this time.

BenQ Joybook A52 upgrades?

Hai.

So, is there anyone else who is using BenQ Joybook A52 (or an ex-user)?

I bought new laptop some time ago, but my A52 is still alive and rolling like new. Wanted to talk about CPU upgrades - since I'll most likely sell it (people in Latvia like to buy old and expensive second-hand crap), I would like to experiment with it a little.

SINCE I work in computer service, I can get many different laptop CPUs, I dont know, if A52's motherboard support anything better than T2130.

At the moment I have Intel Pentium Dual Core T2130 1.86GHz CPU installed (stock), I was wondering, if its possible to get anything more powerful, because I cant find any useful information about this laptop's model anywhere on the Inthernet, and, as BenQ users have noticed, BenQ support sucks balls, so no useful info from them either.

So far I have upgraded HDD and RAM - now I have 250GB 7200RPM HDD and 2x1GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM (motherboard dont support more). Also I have upgraded WiFi card, because stock Atheros card was too weak, and DVD RW device - took one from dead HP with lightscribe.

I know that GPU is integrated and not upgradeable.

So, any success stories about upgrading A52 CPU?

P.S. I bet noone here even uses this model anymore, but why not give it a shot?

Reply 1 : BenQ Joybook A52 upgrades?

I suppose get any Socket M CPU and you should be set.

Do you have experience in upgrading the CPU of a laptop?

setup win7 without formating hard

hi guys,i want to know is there any way to setup a new windows 7 on my sony vaio vpc F116 when windows doesnt come up(when repair doesnt work)because i heared that after changing windows,we cant find related drivers of it ?a way except doing recovery because i dont want to miss my information in my hard disk

Reply 1 : setup win7 without formating hard

You could try setting up Windows 7 onto a new partition you create during setup provided you have enough RAW space to work with. This will at least give you the interface you need to pull your files off. Afterward, you can reformat with no data loss. If the repair process didn't work as it should, this is probably the simplest option to explore. Just my thoughts. It is what I would do if in the same situation as you with my own machine.

Reply 2 : setup win7 without formating hard

Have you tried to rescue your data through the Vaio Care Recovery? There is an option right before you go through the Recovery/Restore: How to perform a custom recovery using the VAIO Care? version 6 software.

Edit: Also, you can get all the drivers through Vaio Care and/or Sony eSupport, so not sure what you meant by that part unless you are trying to load a different version of Windows, like Vista/XP/32-bit version. But it seemed your main concern is losing your data, so you can try the above data rescue or some other rescue software, then re-install Windows or do a full Recovery.

You can either hit F10 at boot up (assuming you did not delete your recovery partition) or you can use your recovery disks (which you should have made as soon as you got your computer). You probably have both of these but you should at least have one or the other since anyone who was going to delete their recovery partition would certainly make the recovery disks first.... Like I said, you can find all your drivers in Vaio Care Recovery (the easiest way) or the Sony Support page for your model. I don't even know which country you are in so you can look that up for yourself.

Edit: Just thought of another way, if you still have your rec partition, you can even hit the Assist button with the computer off and it will boot right into Recovery.

Help me fix my laptop! Advent 6555 (MSI725) + USB port

I have had my laptop for around 2 years now and i fancy a change. However i could do with fixing my current laptop before i can sell hit.

1) My first issue is the screen bezel is cracked near the hinge on the bottom left, as a result the lid won't shut properly and obviously it is loose. Does anyone know where i can get hold of a screen bezel?

2) The laptop squeels and hums as a result of the fan, its either because there is something clogging the cpu fan or the fan is rubbish. I believe it is the second option and if this is the case where am i likely to be able to get hold of a better HSF ?

3) One of the usb ports has had the plastic insides fall out meaning that if you use it you can often make the pins touch inside and as a result the laptop will crash. Is it possible to get hold of laptop internal "holes"?

Reply 1 : Help me fix my laptop! Advent 6555 (MSI725) + USB port

1. Ebay or rkcomputer.

2. You can take out the fan, check the model number on it, then look for the same fan on ebay. Or you can try cleaning your fan. BTW rkcomputer might also have the right HSF.

3. Don't know what holes you're talking about.

Xps17 wireless card Help?

Hi

I am current getting downloads of 100 kb per second at home with cable internet, slow but good enough for internet use.

Which wireless card is better for my xps 17?

Will there be a difference?

Will the kb increase?

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230

Thanks

Reply 1 : Xps17 wireless card Help?

xx30 has bluetooth. Do you already have BT module? If so, get the 6200... The bad thing is it sits under the keyboard on the 17.

Reply 2 : Xps17 wireless card Help?

Increased speed all depends on your ISP and router. Most half decent wireless cards will get you good download speeds. There are other factors also, your home, distance from the router and all of that.

Also what WLAN card do you have right now?

Reply 3 : Xps17 wireless card Help?

I currently have the Intel pro wireless 2915abg.

If I get the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230, do I need a dual band router?

thanks

No you do not need a dual band router. But if you want to utilize the dual band you will need to purchase one.

It seems that expansion port 2 has 32 pins (exclude the thick 19v on the sides)

while expansion port 3 has 40 pins (exclude the thick 19v on the sides)

but yet you can plug in expansion port 2 into 3 or vice versa??

Thats not close enough to see the pins

Reply 3 : closeup pic of expansion port 2 to count pins

Well from what I've read I don't believe expansion port 2 and 3 are compatible, hints the need for an adapter

Reply 4 : closeup pic of expansion port 2 to count pins

I would think that too, but when I count the pins of the PR1010 dock its 16, yet on the tx1000 its 20.

(all exclude the 19v power pins on the side ends)

I brought a broken docking station (the "line of resistors" overheating?? from listening to too much music?? don't know how to diagnose it), yet the plug plugs into the tx1000 fine.

1) I want to get the usb pin from the dock cable..

and then 2) try to interface the NEC usb chip so that the USB to serial converter can also be used. (and I would also get a usb 6 port hub from the 2 NEC chips.. if it was VIA, SIS I would not bother, but NEC makes good chipset)

I think the PR1010 is not for tx1000, but yet the plug fits 100%

I have another compaq laptop too but it does not have dock connector, that part is "covered"

My (short) journey w/ a Z13

Been lurking here a while reading the various forums for Sony, Lenovo, Dell (business) and HP (business) and finally bit the bullet and ordered a Z133 from the Microsoft Store.

Unfortunately, the machine didn't live up to my expectations or Sony's claim of 7 hours of battery life and I wanted to share a few points for folks like me who may be sitting on the fence deciding between a sandy bridge model and the current Z.

First, here's what I was looking for in a machine:
  • Weight somewhere between 3 - 3.5lbs
  • 12-13” screen w/ good colors, contrast, viewing angle
  • Core i5 or better
  • SSD (100gb+, don't need a huge one)
  • 6-7 hour battery life for Windows (MacBooks don’t hit this)
  • HDMI or digital output on the notebook itself (not via docking)
  • Good keyboard and multitouch trackpad

The Z hits all of these on paper, but I found it lacking for a few reasons:
  • Real-life battery life is nowhere near claimed @ 7hrs. 4 hours was typical.
  • While it's a multitouch trackpad you have to find drivers and apps to get two-finger scrolling. It's finicky at best, mis-clicks were common. I'm used to Apple's trackpads under Windows. I imagine Lenovo's are better as well.
  • Loose battery rattled while moving/carrying it. Not cool for a $1700 machine.
  • No recovery DVDs? I don't like recovery partitions, let me use the 6 gigs!
  • The screen, while great, was a bit too-high resolution for me. I'm not that old but 1600x900 was a bit too much. Most people will be fine with this, I wasn't. Running at a higher DPI setting was ugly. Lower res = blurry.
  • The machine just felt 'cheap'. I'm used to MacBook and Lenovo chassis and the Sony doesn't live up here. Not saying that it isn't durable or wouldn't stand the test of time, but if I'm going to be typing on it every day I want something that is top notch.

Anyway, on to waiting for the sandy bridge models, looking at these machines:
  • Lenovo x220 w/ IPS
  • Sony Vaio SB Series (will the screen be any good?)
  • Samsung 9 Series

Anyway, great forum and resources here no matter which brand someone ends up with. Comment/flame away

Edit: The machine went back to the Microsoft Store after a couple days. GREAT service from them.

Reply 1 : My (short) journey w/ a Z13

Sorry to hear that you had a bad time with the Z13, I get 5.5 to 7 hours out of my new Z13. Were you using the stamina mode options? If you run it at full pelt I agree the battery life can be poor.

It's like that with all laptops, you never get near advertised times. If u go low brightness, wifi off and all in powersave you should get around 6 hours (with wifi more like 4,5 - 5)
  • While it's a multitouch trackpad you have to find drivers and apps to get two-finger scrolling. It's finicky at best, mis-clicks were common. I'm used to Apple's trackpads under Windows. I imagine Lenovo's are better as well.

Wow i hope you didn't fall asleep from such a long day. It's fixable in like 2min with new synaptic drivers
  • Loose battery rattled while moving/carrying it. Not cool for a $1700 machine.

It's by design, apparantly for expanding/shrinking of battery during temperature changes. Maybe a bit lame reasoning, but it seems that's why the did it.
  • No recovery DVDs? I don't like recovery partitions, let me use the 6 gigs!

About 95% of the laptops from the last few(3?) years have had a recovery partition and a question at first boot to burn the disk. It's as normal as it can get nowadays. And with a simple partitioning program it's gone in 2mins.
  • The screen, while great, was a bit too-high resolution for me. I'm not that old but 1600x900 was a bit too much. Most people will be fine with this, I wasn't. Running at a higher DPI setting was ugly. Lower res = blurry.

personal preference, nothing to do with the laptop

yeah it's not completely aluminium, but it's sturdy enough. Just because it feels like it doesn't mean it actually is ''cheap''. And 2nd i guess you never felt a cheap notebook before? Since the Z feels way better.

see the above for comments on the Z.

Other than that, it seems the SA/SB series will look even cheaper, but that might be just me.

If you mean design-wise - I'm 100% with you. Compared to Z and S - hideous!!

Other than that - should be at least as robust as the S, which IMO is very durable, especially the base (not to be compared with Lenovo T though - those are rather industrial machines).

Reply 5 : My (short) journey w/ a Z13

I ad ordered the Z13 to replace my Toshiba M400 and as mentioned in another thread it came defective, so I had to send it back... my journey was all of maybe 15 minutes. But I would find 4 hours outstanding compared to my Toshiba which was lucky to make it about 90 minutes on battery (and that was when the battery was relatively new... today it's more like about 60). So I'm pretty much tethered to a wall socket, and I'm trying to get away from that at least to some degree.

In the end I found I actually do want the FHD screen... in the brief time I had it and even used it with RDP I found the resolution to be OK for me. So yeah, I understand it is a matter of personal preference... if I had decided the resolution was just too fine I would have gone to a 15" model of some kind instead.

My battery is tight. $1700 from the Microsoft Store?!?!?!?!?!?. Man, they saw you coming didn't they. The max price anyone should pay for the Z from Microsoft Store should be about $1100 and change. That's before the various GC kickbacks, the student discount and cashback.

Dude, welcome to the 21st century. Who ships DVDs anymore? Make your own then recover the lost space.

I agree. I disagree about cranking the DPI. Yes, some apps do look bad, but you can selective crank the DPI.

Dude, when I first played with the Z in store. I wasn't feeling the love. I said it felt like a $600 computer and not a $2000 one. Now... It's grown on me. It's a little jewel. The keyboard is still rubbish though. Might as well be typing on a MacBook. Sony should contract out the keyboard from Lenovo.

Bottom line is. What else can you find with it's spec in a 13" 3lb or smaller package? You can't. The Z is the only game in town. Paying $1700 was too much. If you paid about $1000 would you have kept it?

Anyway, on to waiting for the sandy bridge models, looking at these machines:
  • Lenovo x221 w/ IPS
  • Sony Vaio SB Series (will the screen be any good?)
  • Samsung 9 Series

Samsung 9 series will cost an arm and a leg..

Lenovo X221 is not out nor planned yet. Just the X220 with IPS screen will be released in early April (Reviews are out and outstanding)

Vaio SB is nice, but not as good I believe than the SA series that has yet to be released

SA has the higher resolution screen which obviously is not a good idea. So SB would be the way to go... or current S if he doesn't insist on Sandy.

Besides that "not as good as" means nothing unless you specify in what fashion you mean it. If the build quality is the same, there is no such thing as "as good as". There is only better configuration for more money.

Reply 9 : My (short) journey w/ a Z13

As Gracy said, if you think the 1600X900 screen is too high res for you, the SB should be right up your alley with a 1366X768 screen. With the extra "sheet" batter the manufacturer claims up to 15 hours total charge (so expect 10-12 in real life?)

Should I get an x220 or t420?

I love the size and battery life of the x220 but I do play games every once in a while so I was thinking of getting the t420 with dedicated graphics...is the x220 powerful enough to game occasionally? Trying to find one laptop I can "do everything" with.

Reply 1 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

X220 would get my vote. If need more than the IGP can deliver then could add a DIY ViDock to increase gaming performance. I know quite a few folks are waiting to see results of that combo. If it all pans out then the doubling of expresscard slot's bandwidth (Series-6 pci-e 2.0, 5GT/s) could deliver results that would make a proper gaming notebook cringe AND NVidia Optimus would allow use of the internal LCD to deliver it.

Reply 2 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

Really depends on what games you're talking about. Some mild RTS and FPS games? The X220 may be sufficient, especially if you do not need the highest graphics settings. The latest demanding RTS and FPS games? The X220 may not be sufficient, and actually, the T420 probably won't be either.

Reply 3 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

I'm debating on the X220 or a T420S. Ive never had a laptop as small as a 12.5 other than a net book and it was way to small. I'm worried about the size of a 12.5 but I have a main desktop at home so I don't need a gaming rig. I'm really only going to use it for class or when I have to stay on campus as I life off campus so a 12.5 is easier to lug around but I hear a lot of people say that the 14" screen is the sweet spot. I went to best buy and some other places and some 14s are really big and bulky. To bad lenovo has no store or site where we can see these things first hand.

im so getting x220. the only game im playing atm is sc2 (on more or less competitive level) and intel 3000 gpu should handle this game EASILY in low details (60fps+)

I say get a T420 if you need its hardware power, otherwise get yourself a cute little x220, although I hate those little things.

Reply 6 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

I would get the x220 with the ips screen. The integrate graphic card on the x220 is more than enough for occasional gaming. If you are not playing game in its max setting, you should be fine with the current generation of integrate graphic.

Would the x220 be able to handle Dragon Age 2. Because isn't the Sandy Bridge IGB more powerfull than the HD3470 graphics card in the T400?

Reply 8 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

I don't see why it wouldn't handle Dragon Age II. The problem is at what quality you want to play the game at.

Reply 9 : Should I get an x220 or t420?

As stated, the x220 will play some modern titles at lower resolution, lower quality. IGP has come a long way, in 1 review they were able to play Left4Dead2 with very playable frame rates. My friend's new MBP 13 with SB graphics is able to play Team Fortress 2 on medium @ 1280x800 with average 40-50 fps. And he is able to play SC2 on it too.

Do realize the T420 will have Quadro graphics, not really suited for gaming unless you try to mod the GeForce drive inf.

is sidejacking working properly on TCP/IP? why it is not popular?

But I see prior discussions about it on google.

Anyone removed sticker from W8 lid?

I just received my W8 today, about 20 minutes ago. I got mine from eBay. Since I was not a member here until after I ordered it, I did not get the really great price of $379, but I am quite happy with my $575 price. Anyway, (now that I started my own post OT) back to my question.

Has anyone removed the silver sticker from their W8. Did it come off well, or pull paint off? Is the Panasonic logo still there, or does the sticker pull the logo off? Did you use anything special to remove the sticker?

Reply 1 : Anyone removed sticker from W8 lid?

SiliconTi said BTW: the sticker over the Panasonic logo peels right off.

Thanks, I thought I read that thread.

After I peeled mine off a federal agent came by and confiscated the W8. You might want to reconsider.

I think he was probably a US Army ToughCop!

Careful here! I'm a former member of the Military Police Corps and I can assure you we usually dealt with more important matters than mattress tags.

Yes. Like "Failure to stop vehicle with front bumper dressed and covered on stop sign." Fine $40. Ft. Gordon, GA 1972

IOW; you stopped at the intersection, which was beyond the actual sign, eh?

Most state traffic laws work the same way.

Actually the front edge of the bumper was closer to 3 inches beyond (I didn't have my transit with me at the time). My front wheel was way behind the sign and the front of the car was a good three feet back from the intersection. I should have guessed something was going to go wrong when I pulled up to to the stop sign and the MP kneeled down to "sight" down the stop sign pole. I always figured MPs got extra brownie points for ticketing an officer.

I think I ended up getting the last laugh though, since I was a Public Affairs Officer at the time and was taking a local reporter on a tour. The reporter got a big kick out of it and ended up doing a second story on the sillyness of the military. Ft. Gordon was, at that time, the home of both the MP school and the Signal School. When the Post Commander saw the story that night over dinner, he ordered the MPs to paint lines extending from the stop sign into the lane of traffic so drivers could actually see where they were expected to stop -- and the MPs had to do the painting themselves. The Post Commander was SC and the common wisdom around post was that only the SC soldiers were getting these tickets (We a had different color registration sticker on our cars than those assigned to the MP school.) In order to "avoid tying up traffic" the Commander ordered the MPs to do the painting on weekends.
